List of Why LRT Construction is Made Elevated
Jakarta – Since the start, Jabodebek Light Rail Transit (LRT) project was constructed with an elevated track. PT Adhi Karya Tbk (ADHI) explained several reasons and calculations which become the reason why the project is made elevated.
Operational Director II ADHI Pundjung Setya Brata said, one of the reason is to eliminate road level crossings. Elevated creates a higher road capacity because there would be no train crossing by. Also, this is to prevent road accidents which often happen in the area.
“Regarding elevated and underground, we have several considerations. Jakarta is developing with its mass transportation lagging behind with the city construction. The option is we use elevated such as non-toll flyover because there is no space available,” he said at Jakarta, Monday (1/14/2019) as reported by sindonews.com.
Pundjung ensures that either the train’s cross capacity or travel frequency could be maximized without disturbing other traffic roads. Because, there will be several flyovers, pedestrian bridges, and other facilities along the LRT road.
Furthermore, elevated keeps the minimum slope of the track (maximum 2%), if the vertical trending goes up and down it will reduce passenger’s comfort. It exploits a large amount of power so it is wasteful of electricity, operational costs and maintenance costs.
“Elevated construction also minimize land acquisitions. If the construction is made above the road then the area below could be utilized after the construction is finished so we could be more efficient in using the land,” he said.
Also, he added that minimizing social problem or disturbance from irresponsible people which is often happening on the regular road becomes the last reason why elevated construction was chosen.
