Transportation Infrastructure Must Consider Earthquake Threat

JAKARTA - Indonesia is located in an area prone to earthquakes because it is located in the path of the pacific ring of fire which become the meeting center of some earth plates. Therefore, the Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia (KEMENHUB) directed that the development of transport infrastructure planning should consider the earthquake threat.

This was stated by the Ministry of Transportation (MENHUB) Budi Karya Sumadi in a national seminar with the theme "Earthquake Hazard Mitigation in Indonesia Transport Infrastructure" on Wednesday (21/12) ago.

"Some of the transportation infrastructure already resistant with the earthquake and in the future the standard will be developed, one of the samples is the MRT construction in Jakarta which already resistant from earthquake up to 9 Richter scales. For the development of Kulonprogo Airport in Yogyakarta, the soil dredging is elevated to 7 meters in order to face the tsunami," explained Budi Karya Sumadi as reported from dephub.go.id (22/12/2016).

Ministry of Transportation, said Budi Karya Sumadi, has the task of the planning of transport infrastructure in a sustainable way. Mitigate the impact of disasters on transportation infrastructure can be done in coordination with the relevant institutions.

"Kemenhub (Ministry of Transportation,-ed) needs to work with agencies/relevant ministries including the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (KEMENPUPR), BMKG, BNPB, Ministry of Social Affairs (KEMENSOS), Local Government, National Earthquake Study Center where we are one of the initiators of its founder, The updating team of Indonesia Map Earthquake in 2016 to plan the construction of transport sustainable," said Budi.
